These photographs capture the lines of tar laid down across roads, parking lots, and other paved surfaces as protection as wear, weather, geography, and time forms cracks through the infrastructure. They are hand-printed cyanotypes, one of the earliest photographic and reprographic technologies, widely used to copy architectural designs and construction diagrams in the 19th and early 20th centuries, hence blueprints.
I’m interested in these lines of tar, which are marks made only semi-autonomously. They follow a path inscribed by patterns of movement and the needs of people traveling. When workers come in to seal the cracks and preserve the road surface, they highlight the underlying fissures.
The lines reflect not only the peculiarities of each environment, but of each repair crew as well. There is a distinguishable style to each section. These lines are the product of the conscious and unconscious actions of the collective, a collaboration on a grand scale.
